August 8-13 2027 - Lyon, France

29th International Conference on Structural Mechanics In Reactor Technology

Welcome Message

Dear colleagues and friends,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 29th International Conference on Structural Mechanics in Reactor Technology (SMiRT29), to be held in the beautiful city of Lyon, France, in August 2027.

SMiRT conferences are the premier international forum to discuss new developments in structural mechanics in reactor technology, as they apply to nuclear fission, fusion or any emerging new reactor designs and technologies. It is a unique platform that brings together participants from academia, industry, and research institutions worldwide to share knowledge, challenge ideas, and foster collaboration.

SMiRT29 aims to build on the rich legacy while introducing new ideas.

In particular, we propose a novel matrix format for organization of conference contributions in divisions, to allow for a more streamlined and smooth organization of technical sessions and presentations. We will also propose new ideas for the early career program, designed to support the next generation of engineers and scientists entering the field.

More details on the program, abstract and paper submission deadlines and registration will be announced in the coming months.

On behalf of the French organizing team I invite you to join us in Lyon and connect with SMiRT community to help shape the future of reactor technology. Your input is what makes SMiRT29 a success.

Sharing knowledge and innovation today for a sustainable future of nuclear energy

About SMiRT

Put into life in 1971 by Thomas Jaeger, the SMiRT(Structural Mechanics in Reactor Technology) conference is an event that brings together the nuclear international community in the field of structural mechanics. This conference, held every two years in alternating between Europe, the Americas, and Asia, is organized under the auspices of the IASMiRTassociation (see http://www.iasmirt.org/).

The conference gathers scientific and engineering disciplines (see technical topics) involved in the structural aspects of the safe design, construction, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning of nuclear installations for electricity production and heat generation. The field encompassed by SMiRT–deterministically and probabilistically –requires the most advanced concept of structural mechanics and materials science be brought together taking into accountthe aging of the structures, components and systems of existing and advanced reactors as well as other nuclear installations.

SMiRT conference’s intention is to fulfill three main objectives:
  •  To bring together the nuclear community represented by their scientific and technical leaders in the different fields (engineers, manufacturers, nuclear system vendors, regulatory bodies, technical support organizations and academics)
  •  To disseminate the results of their work and the related vast number of research and development projects worldwide, by publication on the website of IASMiRT
  • To encourage development of early career engineers and professionals, which is essential for an effective safety culture and for knowledge management.
