Description
Dr. Chokshi, a nuclear power plant expert with over 50 years of experience, retired from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 2014 after 34 years of service. Since then, he has consulted for various organizations, including the NRC, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Nuclear Risk Research Committee (CRIEPI) in Japan, and others. He is also actively involved in several ASME and ANS Codes and Standards Committees. Notably, he has been a permanent member of the Advisory Board of the International Association of Structural Mechanics in Reactor Technology (IASMiRT).
During his 34-year tenure at the NRC, Dr. Chokshi managed research and regulatory domains encompassing seismic and structural engineering, materials engineering, operating experience risk analysis, and radiation protection. He played a pivotal role in probabilistic risk assessment and the development of external event methodology and standards. In 1997, he spearheaded the revision of seismic regulations, incorporating probabilistic seismic hazard analysis methods. His expertise spans a wide range of fields, including earth sciences, engineering, fragility analysis, plant systems, and risk assessment.
Post-retirement, Dr. Chokshi has been actively involved in developing risk-informed seismic design approaches, associated regulatory guides, and safety reviews for an advanced reactor construction application.
Dr. Chokshi served as a member of the Inaugural Board of Directors of the ASME Codes and Standards Technology Institute (CSTI) and was elected Vice Chairman. He also served as the past Chairman of the Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) Working Group on Integrity and Aging of Components and Structures and initiated and chaired the Seismic Subgroup. Additionally, he led an IAEA Working Area focused on the risk assessment of multi-unit sites in response to external events.
Dr. Chokshi has published several reports and papers related to the regulatory and research aspects of nuclear safety.
