Description

José Antunes got a Mechanical Engineering degree from IST (1977) in Lisbon, Portugal. He obtained his MSc (1983) and PhD (1986) degrees in France, from Paris University. As Principal Researcher of the Center for Nuclear Sciences and Technologies (C2TN) of IST, in Portugal, he supervised the Applied Dynamics Laboratory. For more than 35 years he has also been visiting researcher at the Nuclear Research Centre (CEA) of the University Paris-Saclay, France. His research, mainly focused on the dynamics of nuclear power components, has been paralleled by work on the vibrations and acoustics of musical instruments, in particular at the Institute of Ethnomusicology, music and dance (INET-md) of the Nova University, in Lisbon. He co-authored 3 books and more than 200 papers, published in reference journals and peer-reviewed international conference proceedings. He also supervised and co-supervised a significant number of PhD and MSc thesis. His work in flow-induced vibrations, nonlinear dynamics, system identification and music acoustics was awarded three international prizes, including two from ASME. In 2012 he was honoured with the prestigious "Foreign Medal" of the French Society of Acoustics.
